Destinations after the AAAA cut
Of the future college swimmers in our race data who cleared the girls' age-11 100 Free AAAA standard (58.29) in SCY, eventual college destinations split D1 64%, D2 13%, D3 22%, and 1% at NAIA or junior colleges.
Drop to the AAA mark (1:01.09) and the split loosens: destinations split D1 66%, D2 12%, D3 21%, and 1% at NAIA or junior colleges.
Notice how wide that spread still is at 11: a fast swim here sorts almost nobody. The same cut a few years later sorts almost everybody — which is the strongest argument for patience a parent could ask for.
These are distributions among swimmers who reached a college roster — not admission probabilities.

The quiet fact in our database: the median future college swimmer at age 11 swam 1:05.08 — landing between A and AA. The middle of the college pipeline sits far below AAAA.

The field is lopsided. In our data, girls age 11 put 6,257 future college swimmers in the 50 Free but just 287 in the 1650 Free — a quiet lane worth knowing about when choosing a second event.

We don't guess; we query. Ladder values: USA Swimming 2025-2028 single-age motivational standards, verified against the official October 10, 2025 revision cell by cell. Destinations: computed from more than 10 million race results by taking each swimmer's best time at the stated age and the college division they later swam in, on an interpolated P5-P95 grid. Everyone in the sample reached a college roster, so every figure is a distribution among survivors — never an admission or recruitment probability.
