We checked what it actually predicted for swimmers who did the same: Beating the girls' age-12 100 Free AAAA standard (56.09, SCY) is fast — but among future college swimmers who did, only 75% went on to D1; 15% landed at D3, NAIA or junior college.
Where the AAAA cut leads
Among the future college swimmers in our database who beat the girls' age-12 100 Free AAAA standard (56.09) in SCY, eventual college destinations split D1 75%, D2 10%, D3 14%, and 1% at NAIA or junior colleges.
One rung down, the AAA mark (58.69) sorts more loosely: destinations split D1 68%, D2 11%, D3 19%, and 2% at NAIA or junior colleges.
Notice how wide that spread still is at 12: a fast swim here sorts almost nobody. The same cut a few years later sorts almost everybody — which is the strongest argument for patience a parent could ask for.

- Between B and AA: this is where the median future college swimmer sat at this age — the fat middle of the college pipeline, not its edge.

Relative to future college swimmers, the toughest AAAA cut at this age is the 50 Back (top 9% of that population), while the 1000 Free AAAA is the most attainable (top 23%). Same letters, different mountains — calibrate praise and plans accordingly.
The emptiest lane
Not every event is equally crowded. Among future college swimmers at girls age 12, the 50 Free draws the most racers (7,755 in our data) and the 1650 Free the fewest (750). Holding a good mark in a thin event means less traffic on the way to a roster spot — second-event math most families never run.

Time standards are the official USA Swimming 2025-2028 single-age motivational standards, verified cell-by-cell against USA Swimming's published document (revision dated October 10, 2025). Destination splits come from more than 10 million competition race results, using each swimmer's best time at the stated age and their eventual college division; percentiles are interpolated on a P5-P95 grid. All figures describe swimmers who reached a college roster (a survivorship sample); they are distributions, never admission or recruitment probabilities.
